Seeking early- or mid-career tenure-track Associate Professor who will be responsible for:
* Directing and teaching at least one of the program’s required core courses each semester (Fall: either Biomaterials Science of Cell-Surface Phenomena, Ceramic Biomaterials, or Polymeric Biomaterials; Spring: Evaluation of Biomaterials)
* Working with the school’s Director of Implantology and other faculty to initiate a program expansion into the area of oral implantology
* Mentoring the required Biomaterial Seminar course each semester
* Conducting research with students and, possibly, in collaboration with other faculty, with the goal to establish an externally funded research program and peer-reviewed publications
* Mentoring M.S. students in the program in terms of identifying appropriate thesis research topics and evaluating career options
* Being prepared to lead the M.S. graduate program in Biomaterials
The mission of the School of Dental Medicine is “Defining excellence in global health.” SDM and University at Buffalo have made substantial investments to further grow oral health research and training opportunities within the school. New investments have been made in infrastructure (Optical Imaging and Analysis Facility), new equipment, new dental operatories, and renovation of laboratory space and clinical space, particularly a new implant center and special needs clinics.
The interdisciplinary Biomaterials Graduate Program (M.S.) grew from and replaced an M.S. program in Dental Materials, which had been sponsored by the School of Dental Medicine since 1971. Over the past 20+ years, courses and research topics have been developed to provide comprehensive knowledge of prosthetic materials, from bio/surface and molecular interactions to device design and surgical requirements. The program emphasizes ethics and professional/client interactions as applied to the fields of medicine, dentistry, regulatory law and engineering. A proposal to expand the current Biomaterials Graduate Program to add a strong component in the field of oral/maxillofacial implantology has been submitted for approval by UB’s Graduate School. The expanded program will stand apart from other implantology programs in the U.S. because we will emphasize a dual-track. For non-clinicians: a 2-year didactic and research track, including clinical observation and pre-clinical hands-on experience, to complete the M.S. degree. For clinicians: a 3-year clinical track with didactic and research requirements to complete the M.S. degree.
The Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences was created in 1994 through the merger of the departments of Oral Medicine, and Stomatology and Interdisciplinary Sciences. ODS is home to the Biomaterials Graduate Program, as well as two CODA-accredited clinical post-graduate programs: the Advanced Certificate Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and the Advanced Certificate Program in Orofacial Pain. Department faculty also are heavily involved in research mentoring and didactic teaching in SDM’s Oral Sciences program (M.S.). Research and scholarship have been key components of the department's mission particularly in the following areas: • implant dentistry and understanding of the surface dynamics at the interface of materials and host tissue; • oral and maxillofacial pathology; • temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain; • bioinformatics and ontology; and • health education and services research, including interprofessional education and practice.
